Building Peace Huts
In 2006, The Institute for Inclusive Security arranged a meeting between two of our leading Women Waging Peace Network members. Though it was clear at the time that the Institute’s staff filmed this video that these women were doing amazing work to build peace in Liberia, to much of the rest of the world Leymah Gbowee and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf were unknown. Now they share the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize.
With the assistance of the Institute, the women met to discuss basic issues in sustaining the work of other peacebuilders in their country. Leymah Gbowee and a delegation of women in Liberia met with President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to discuss concerns in building ‘peace huts’ for women to gather in the rural areas as a special place for mediation. Here, Ms. Gbowee lays out a problem, to an attentive President Sirleaf, that she and her team are having in constructing one of the ‘peace huts’.
